Baby bath time is fun, no doubt, but it can also be toxic and dangerous for your baby. Why?

non-toxic baby bath time

  • First there’s the water itself. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), 42 states have tap water that’s contaminated with more than 140 unregulated chemicals that lack safety standards. If your baby is drinking the bath water this is obviously a problem.
  • If you clean your tub with harsh cleaners containing toxic chemicals, your baby may not only be drinking chemical residue left in the tub but she’s also at risk of inhaling these chemicals or absorbing these chemicals through her skin.
  • Next up are your baby’s bath toys. Plenty of baby bath toys contain harmful chemicals in their plastic make-up. Once she puts a bath toy in her mouth she’s ingesting them.
  • Lastly, the products you use on your baby can contain preservatives, chemicals, and other toxic junk that babies don’t need.

How to make bath time safe and non-toxic:

  • Get a bathtub faucet filter (from a home improvement store) or try to keep your baby from drinking the water.
  • Clean with green cleaners. To shine and clean your tub baking soda and lemon juice works great or buy a non-toxic commercial green cleaner like Seventh Generation Natural Shower Cleaner.
  • Use only baby cleaning products with natural and organic ingredients and no chemical additives. I like Earth Mama Angel Baby baby products - they smell great and are some of the safest baby soaps and lotions on the planet.
  • Buy safe bath toys. Look for PVC free, BPA free, and phthalate-free bath toys like Boon’s Odd Ducks.
