I don’t know which season is the worst for buggies but I don’t like any of them. During the summer mosquitoes come out but then in some places they’re around all the time in areas that have say, a lake.

baby-flies-free.jpgIf you frequent places that can get a little buggy you might be thinking about a bug spray for your little one. Here are some basics you should know.

  • Most people think that DEET works better than most other bug sprays but it’s not safe to use more than once daily and only on babies over the age of two months.
  • Bug sprays that have eucalyptus or soybean oil work well but some babies are allergic.
  • Never use combo sunscreen and bug spray. Sunscreen wears down and if your baby’s outside you should be reapplying every few hours. However, reapplying bug spray every few hours isn’t safe — see the combo problem.
  • Make sure than you do a little test first. Since some babies are allergic to natural bug sprays try a little on his arm first and wait. If no redness, rashes, or strange irritability occurs you’re likely good to go. Also, never spray bug repellent in his face. Add a small amount to your own hand and rub on his arms, legs, and other areas but never on his face or hands (babies love hands in the mouth; ick!)

Personally, even though DEET is supposedly deemed mostly safe it is still a chemical; I prefer natural items for babies. The Natural Newborn makes a line of natural baby bug repellent products you can check out — remember natural does not mean safe though for all babies. Still do the allergy test.
