The Environmental Working Group (EWG), doesn’t think that the FDA is doing a very good job protecting babies from toxins and chemicals.

They aren’t wrong. The FDA regulates cosmetics but not bath products. So a baby shampoo could be chock full of chemicals and still sitting on the local drug store shelf.

EWG recently released a report about the toxins found in children’s soaps and the news is not good. If you visit EWG’s new website, Skin Deep, and click on baby products you’ll be shocked.

For instance, Baby Magic Gentle Baby Bath receives a score of 7 from Skin Deep, placing it in the high toxic hazard category. They have a multitude of products listed including soaps, sunscreen, powders, and much more. When if you click on a product you can find out it’s rating (safe-low, mid, high toxicity) and a slew of other information as well. Info such as:

• Animal tested or not
• What types of chemicals are in the product
• What the ingredients are linked to (cancer, allergies, etc.)
• Type of concerns about the product
• Data collected on the product

The site is easy to use and lists many safe options for baby products along with consumer tips. Pay them a visit; but be forewarned, you’ll be cleaning out your bathroom cupboards before the day is out.
