Garbage can safety

Babies, for reasons unknown to me, LOVE garbage cans. It’s like garbage calls to little ones. It’s frustrating, and not safe.

Once your baby is up and moving about, you need to baby proof all the garbage cans in the house. This means the kitchen, bath, office, and so on.

Ideas:

Keep the garbage behind a baby proof latched door, such as the bathroom cabinet.

Have cans with lids that latch - just make sure they really latch. Babies are super smart; I’ve seen a baby carefully uninstall a toilet latch that wasn’t put on correctly. If all you use is a latch, it has to be strong.

Take out dangerious trash right away. There’s no reason to toss sharp stuff in the inside trash. There’s always a chance your baby could get.

Create a pretend garbage. Get one clean small garbage can. Fill it with pretend safe garbage. Shredded paper, small boxes, a yougurt tub or two. Your baby will see this and decide to play with it instead of the real trash.
