During the winter we all get a lot of colds. My own unscientific theory is that sleep deprived mamas get even more sniffles than the average human.

breastfeed when sickThat said you may be wondering if you can breastfeed right through all the sneezing and coughs this winter. Not only can you continue to breastfeed but you should - it’s better for your baby. Breastfeeding can actually help your baby to not get the same nasty colds you’re getting.

When you’re sick your body produces antibodies for that sickness; some of which make their way to your breast milk.  Of course, you pass these antibodies right along to your little one which can reduce the chance of her catching what you have. This may be why you’ll see an entire sick family, but the baby in the family is totally fine and healthy.

To keep as many sick germs from reaching your babe as possible, continue to breastfeed, wash your hands often - more than usual, and don’t sneeze or cough (or let anyone else) on your baby.
