Is St. John’s wort safe during pregnancy?

St. John’s wort is a herbal medication. However, just because it’s herb, and not a chemical concoction, doesn’t make it safe for pregnancy.

St John’s wort is commonly used for treating mild depression, but it has been used for other issues as well. Both drugs during pregnancy and herbal medications taken at any time lack proper research; and St. John’s wort is no exception. There haven’t actually been any human based studies regarding the safety, or lack of safety of St. John’s wort during pregnancy.

One study showed that St John’s wort can cause low birth weights in animals. No studies show that St John’s wort will cause disabilities, either cognitive or physical, although some studies show that taking St John’s wort while breastfeeding can cause overly sleepy or colicky babies.

If you’re taking a supplement while pregnant, or want to, the best course of action is to discuss it with your health care provider. Like any other drug, herbs need to be weighed with careful criteria. Is it dangerious for you if you don’t take it? And how will it affect you baby? Which is worse? Your health care provider can help you decide.
