Three pregnancy dangers that are overblown

There are some pregnancy dangers that you should avoid for sure - raw fish, scuba diving, getting a tattoo, and taking meds you haven’t discussed with your health care provider.

However, some of those pregnancy dangers you hear about, are a little overblown. Such as…

Your cat: Yikes! Toxoplasmosis! This is a concern, but studies show that you’re far more likely to get infected with Toxoplasmosis by eating poorly washed veggies or undercooked meat, than you are from your kitty. To be perfectly safe side, have someone else change the litter box while you’re pregnant, but really, you’d have to touch cat feces, then touch your mouth without washing your hands to get this, so it’s not a big danger.

Dying your hair: Hair coloring has never been shown to be totally safe during pregnancy, but it’s also never been shown to be big time dangerous either. The flip side is because there’s no solid research, it’s best to avoid coloring your hair during the first trimester, (this is major important baby development time). But most research agrees that hair coloring is ok during the second and third trimesters.

Air travel: In a low risk pregnancy, air travel is not a danger. No study has ever connected air travel directly to miscarriage, baby birth defects, or other health issues. There are two times you should be concerned with flying during pregnancy - one, you have a high-risk pregnancy or two, you’re very close to your due date (close as in weeks). In either case, discuss flying with your health care provider before you attempt to fly.
