Golf during pregnancy
Lisa Stone
If you love to hit the links but are expecting, you may wonder if you can still keep up your golf game during pregnancy. Lisa Stone, an ACE-certified Pre-and Post-Natal Fitness Instructor, has some information for you.
Your question
I began golfing last summer and would like to continue this year,
but have yet to go out due to my pregnancy. I am 5-1/2 months
pregnant now. Although it is not a strenuous sport, I was concerned
about the twisting involved when hitting the ball and whether it is
still safe to continue. - Janet in St Catharines, Ontario
The expert answers
Janet,
Assuming you've gotten the okay from your healthcare provider, let comfort
be your guide as far as golf is concerned. The twisting movements may
become uncomfortable for you in the next few weeks as your belly and breasts
grow and become more pendulous. If that's the case, maybe you can
temporarily alter your swing so that you can continue playing. Or, maybe
the rest of your pregnancy can be devoted to working on your putting.
In either case, just pay close attention to your body's signals, let someone
else carry your heavy golf bag (or use a golf cart), and enjoy being
outside!
Lisa :)
